Brief Summary:
While mapping the new border between Russia and Finland after the war, the joint task force stumbles upon a mysterious sauna in a remote swamp, a sauna that allegedly has the power to wash away all sins. Full Description: Two Finnish brothers, one a war-hardened patriot and the other a bookish bureaucrat living in Sweden, join a task force to plot the hard-fought border between Russia and Finland. The older brother is bitter and angry, determined to concede not an extra inch of land to the hated Russians. He keeps a running tally of the people that he's killed, and his paranoia and anger ensure that the tally will keep rising, in spite of the new peace. One of the Russian members of the task force insightfully accuses him of resenting the peace, which deprives him of a legitimate reason to indulge his homicidal instincts. The younger brother considers himself to be civilized and rational, until the day that he feels the warrior's lustful urge to rape a sweet young girl whom they have forced into her cellar in an attempt to provision the mapping commission. Terrified at his weakness, he flees the cellar, locking the girl inside. His brother promises to release her before they leave, and they rejoin the rest of the commission. Before long, the border leads them straight through an unwholesome swampland, where strange visions begin to manifest to the brothers. Their sins are pursuing them, aided by the power of the pagan land in which they find themselves. When they find a mysterious sauna in the middle of the swamp, they are told that this is a place where all sins can be washed away... Breathtaking cinematography and a wild and beautiful landscape highlight this story of darkness, repentance and forgiveness. The filmmakers (the team responsible for THE JADE WARRIOR, Finland's first kung-fu picture) opt for a disjointed chronology, which is initially confusing but which eventually works its way into a satisfying circle, representative of the cycle of sins and redemption. A bold, artistic and powerful film, SAUNA may not deliver the blazing gunfire and high-flying kicks of other Fantastic Fest titles, it more than compensates with creepiness and suspense. Only from Finland will you get a horror film bathed in Sauna culture, but this spa does not deliver calm and relaxation. (Karrie League) Keep checking back to Twitch.net because the producers of SAUNA are moving on to another project next year, IRON SKY. Premise: the Nazis weren't defeated, but instead secretly retreated to the dark side of the moon to plot the eventual rise of the fourth Reich. That time is now. |

**Some spoilers**
I think the key to understanding this movie is the line (roughly) 'The monks found it when they got here'. Also important: the villagers practiced no religion and the 'God can not bear to look' line. I think the sauna predates Christianity, maybe even humanity. Think The Stone Tape. What they found wasn't redemption or damnation...maybe something worse. I thought it moved at a good pace; there was always something happening. Good movie.
